While the word “刀 katana” is more famous around the world, there is actually another Japanese word called “日本刀 Nihon-tō” that represents katana too. But how are these two different?
Nihon-tō literally means “Japanese sword,” and it has a strict definition that it must be made from the traditional material and procedures using ancient techniques to make them.
Nihon-tō refers not only to the swords, but also the naginata, spears, and short daggers. On the other hand, "katana" was originally a general term
for single-edged swords. In other words, all single-edged swords around the world, not just in Japan, were called katana.
However, today, even the Japanese have become ambiguous about the original definition of these words. Therefore, it is recognized that there is basically no significant difference. But please keep in mind that “katana” is usually only used for swords and hardly for long-range weapons like naginata and spears.
