Question from the comments! "When Do You Actually Say Itadaki-masu and Gochisosama-desita?"
Itadaki-masu means “I will have (eat) this,” and Gochisosama-deshita means “This was a great meal (feast),” both in the most respectful way possible in Japanese. Generally we are taught in Japan to say this before and after the meal as we put our hands together to express our appreciation to our food. It is one of the ways to teach our children how to be grateful for something we tend to take for granted.
However, we can actually say this directly to the people who have prepared or paid for the food for us too. For example, I often say Itadaki-masu to someone who has offered me a snack when I visited their house, or I often say Gochisōsama-deshita to the restaurant staff when I finish paying and are about to leave, to express my appreciation to them too. Using these phrases not only for your meal but also for other people will make you sound very fluent in Japanese, so I hope you can try it out if you have a chance!
