Title: Juvenile snow crab habitat and response to warming in the Chukchi Sea
Speaker: Daniel Cooper, MS, Research Fish Biologist at NOAA Alaska Fisheries Science Center, Seattle, WA
Abstract: Juvenile snow crab habitat in the Chukchi Sea was studied during a period of ocean warming. During a cold year early in study, most juvenile crab of all sizes inhabited cold areas. In later years, the smallest size classes were restricted to cold areas, or were effectively absent, and larger juveniles were present in warmer areas. Juvenile snow crab could be impacted by the recent reduction in habitat with cold summer bottom temperature in the Chukchi Sea (and Bering Sea).
EcoFOCI 2023 Summer Seminar Series
This seminar is part of NOAA EcoFOCI (Ecosystems & Fisheries-Oceanography Coordinated Investigations)'s bi-annual seminar series that are focused on the ecosystems of the North Pacific Ocean, Bering Sea and the US Arctic to improve understanding of ecosystem dynamics and applications of that understanding to the management of living marine resources. EcoFOCI is a joint research program between the Alaska Fisheries Science Center (NOAA/ NMFS/ AFSC) and the Pacific Marine Environmental Laboratory (NOAA/ OAR/ PMEL).
