Those of us that produce video for a living are constantly under pressure. Not just from clients etc, but from ourselves, more so than anyone else. We feel a deep desire for creative fulfilment in all that we do, and to make our next thing bigger and better than the last. It's a never ending pursuit. As is the nature of it being a livelihood, we also spend most of our time creating for other people, rather than for ourselves.
Sometimes therefore, it's nice to give yourself a break and make something for yourself, for no reason at all, other than to just create a feeling. A vibe. To capture a real moment in your day, and just shoot some images that look interesting to you. That's it. So often the world doesn't offer up the time for it, but you have to just take it.
This is one of those times. No story. No purpose. Something to just feel. A recent moment on my way home from a commercial shoot where I decided to stop at the seafront, pull the camera out, as well as a lens I haven't used for a while. Just for the fun of it. Like taking a classic car out of the garage to go for a spin.
The weather was terrible. Proper grim. But there's something about conditions like these that lend themselves to minimalist images and a melancholy vibe. I got absolutely drenched, from head to toe, but I enjoyed just taking that moment to stop and let the weather blow cobwebs away.
So here's a few images that, to me, look like they could be album art or something. No bells and whistles, just brief moments, as they were. Youtube will probably crush it, but oh well. I hope you can feel it.
I may do more of these. Different locations, different conditions, and random moments. Or I may just delete. Don't know yet.
Shot on the LUMIX S1II in 6K Open Gate, with the TTArtisan 75mm f/1.5. The 75mm is a super interesting piece of glass. I don't use it often, but every time I do, I enjoy it. It seems to make you shoot differently. The images have a full on vintage look (even more so than some of my actual vintage lenses), which perhaps isn't a surprise given it's a modern reproduction of the classic Zeiss Biotar design. It definitely plays best as a portrait lens, and wouldn't be your first choice to shoot scenes like these without a subject or point of interest. It's super super soft wide open with a heavy fall off and vignette, especially when the front element is covered in rain as was the case here. All part of the charm. The lens is not for everyone, or every job, but I like it a lot.
