On March 17, 1990, at the Hilton Hotel in Las Vegas, undefeated champions Julio César Chávez (68-0) and Meldrick Taylor (24-0-1) met in one of the most dramatic and controversial unification bouts in boxing history. The fight was for the WBC and IBF Light Welterweight Titles and lived up to every expectation.
Taylor, a 1984 Olympic gold medalist, displayed superior speed and volume punching, while Chávez relentlessly applied pressure, focusing on brutal inside body attacks and short hooks throughout the 12-round war. Despite being behind on the scorecards, Chávez scored a dramatic knockdown in the final round and won the bout by TKO at 2:58 of Round 12, just two seconds before the final bell — a decision that remains one of the most debated in boxing history.
