On June 17, 1954, world heavyweight champion Rocky Marciano defended his title against former champion Ezzard Charles at Yankee Stadium in New York. Charles started fast and boxed brilliantly in the early rounds, but Marciano gradually took over and won a unanimous decision after 15 hard rounds.
This was Marciano’s only title fight to go the full 15 rounds, and it is remembered as one of the greatest heavyweight championship fights ever staged. The bout was scored 8-5-2 for Marciano by referee Ruby Goldstein, 8-6-1 by Harold Barnes, and 9-5-1 by Artie Aidala.
