On September 25, 1962, undefeated top contender Sonny Liston challenged Floyd Patterson for the World Heavyweight Championship at Comiskey Park in Chicago, Illinois, USA.
Entering the fight as the feared No. 1 contender, Liston had demolished nearly every leading heavyweight in the division. Despite being champion, Patterson entered the bout as an underdog against the powerful challenger.
About halfway through the opening round, Liston landed a crushing right uppercut and quickly followed with a devastating combination that sent Patterson to the canvas. Patterson rose but was unable to beat the count, giving Liston a knockout victory at 2:06 of Round 1.
The victory crowned Sonny Liston as the new World Heavyweight Champion and marked one of the most dramatic title changes in boxing history.
