Jules Massenet - Méditation from Thaïs (Piano Solo, 1894 Heugel Edition)
This video features my solo piano interpretation of “Méditation” from Thaïs by French composer Jules Massenet - using the 1894 Heugel edition (Plate H. et Cie. 9622), an early solo piano arrangement likely prepared by pianist Louis Diémer, though uncredited in the score. Originally written for solo violin and orchestra, this adaptation explores the piece’s lyrical core through a piano texture.
*Méditation is one of Massenet’s most beloved compositions, originally composed in 1894 as an instrumental interlude between scenes in Act II of his opera Thaïs. The opera follows the story of a devout monk and a courtesan-turned-saint, set in 4th-century Egypt. This intermezzo reflects the title character’s inner transformation — a moment of spiritual awakening and deep introspection.
**Jules Émile Frédéric Massenet (1842 - 1912) was a French composer of the Romantic era best known for his operas, of which he wrote more than thirty. The two most frequently staged are Manon (1884) and Werther (1892). He also composed oratorios, ballets, orchestral works, incidental music, piano pieces, songs and other music.
While still a schoolboy, Massenet was admitted to France's principal music college, the Paris Conservatoire. There he studied under Ambroise Thomas, whom he greatly admired. After winning the country's top musical prize, the Prix de Rome, in 1863, he composed prolifically in many genres, but quickly became best known for his operas. Between 1867 and his death forty-five years later he wrote more than forty stage works in a wide variety of styles, from opéra-comique to grand-scale depictions of classical myths, romantic comedies, lyric dramas, as well as oratorios, cantatas and ballets. Massenet had a good sense of the theatre and of what would succeed with the Parisian public. Despite some miscalculations, he produced a series of successes that made him the leading composer of opera in France in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
***Although I’ve performed Méditation many times in various ensemble settings - with violin, cello, even flute - it was the closing credits of the 2023 French film The Taste of Things (La Passion de Dodin Bouffant) that drew my attention to the solo piano version. The transcription used there (by Philipp von Oeyen) inspired me to revisit the piece from a new perspective - quiet, reflective, and deeply personal.

Aphex Twin - aisatsana [102] (although the indication of the tempo in the title, in this case, does not make any sense. I played without a metronome at my own pace)
1. aisatsana [felt] 00:00
2. aisatsana [ambient] 06:28
3. aisatsana [tape] 13:00
4. aisatsana [glass] 19:19
“aisatsana” is the final track off Aphex Twin’s 2014 release, Syro. A departure from the active electronic music which makes up of the majority of Aphex Twin’s catalog, aisatsana is a simple, quiet, calm, and melancholic piano piece with added bird sounds.
The title of the song is the name of Aphex Twin’s wife, Anastasia, spelt backwards.
The song itself was composed and played on a hanging player piano for an art installation at the Barbican, in London, in 2012.
*Syro is the sixth studio album by Aphex Twin, the alias of British electronic musician Richard D. James, released on 19 September 2014 on Warp. It was Jamess first album under the Aphex Twin name since Drukqs. The album was recorded over several years on a wide range of equipment setups.

Ryuichi Sakamoto: 20220302 - sarabande
Note from Sakamoto official score store:
Included on Ryuichi Sakamotos last solo album, 12 - the twelfth and final solo studio album (twentieth studio album overall) by Ryuichi Sakamoto released January 17, 2023. 12 is an album of 12 pieces selected from his music sketches Sakamoto composed as if keeping a sound diary while battling illness. Each composition is titled with the date of production. Sarabande is a Spanish dance music incorporated into a suite from the Baroque period. Sakamoto added the title sarabande after the date of this piece only, describing, I want you to imagine a slow and elegant dance in triple metre. This is the first appearance as a piano score.
12 has been noted to be an unhurried minimalist electronic album that features the sound of him breathing as though engaged in strenuous activity overlayed on sparse piano pieces within electronic soundscapes imbued with a sobering weight.
At Metacritic, which assigns a weighted rating out of 100 to reviews from mainstream critics, the album has an average score of 89 based on seven reviews, indicating universal acclaim. The Skinny gave 12 a 5-star review, noting that, unlike his previous works, 12 is a collection [that] instead deals in the turbulent and unpredictable period that comes before the unknown. In a positive review, Pitchfork highlights how Rarely does an album this understated say so much.
