Located right off Interstate 5 on the Grapevine, with over 100,000 people passing by every day, but very few stopping to visit, is the Fort Tejon State Historic Park. A place where you can get a look at what California was like when it was still part of the Wild West.
Opened in 1854, Fort Tejon was only around for a decade. In that time it provided a vital role in protecting the road traveling from Los Angeles into California's Central Valley and the nearby Sebastian Indian Reservation.
Fort Tejon was also a stop on the Butterfield Overland Stage, the destination for the Army's camel experiment, and the location where early pioneer Peter Lebeck was killed by a bear.
