On December 18, 2011, Chicago Bears wide receiver Johnny Knox suffered a career-ending spinal injury during a game against the Seattle Seahawks. After fumbling a pass, he scrambled for the ball and collided with Seahawks defensive end Anthony Hargrove. The impact caused Knox's body to bend backward at an unnatural angle, fracturing a vertebra.
Early in the first quarter at Soldier Field, Knox caught a short pass but had the ball knocked loose by safety Kam Chancellor. As Knox instinctively spun and dove to recover the loose fumble, he was met head-on by Hargrove, who was also diving for the ball. The momentum of the 285-pound defender slamming into Knox’s upper body forced his spine into a severe and unnatural hyperextension.
Knox was left writhing in pain on the turf before being immobilized on a stretcher and carted off the field. He was rushed to the hospital and diagnosed with a fractured vertebra and significant spinal nerve damage. The following day, he underwent emergency spinal fusion surgery.
Although Knox avoided permanent paralysis, the physical trauma was devastating. He was forced to miss the entire 2012 NFL season while going through rigorous rehabilitation. Despite his efforts to return to the field, lingering pain and reduced mobility made a comeback impossible. In February 2013, the Bears officially terminated his contract, prompting Knox to announce that he was retiring from professional football.
