Having left behind the darkness of Hell, Book 3 of John Milton's Paradise Lost rather appropriately begins with an invocation of the light, and reflects on both its theological and personal significance. As in the Classical epics, the council of the gods reveals the planned orchestration of the plot, which entails the use of Satan's enmity against him, to the greater glory of God.

Milton's explanation of human freedom, responsibility, and grace are key in this book.
