Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein is a famous novel, and it is important for a variety of scholarly reasons. In terms of genre, it has the features of a gothic novel and a Bildungsroman. Yet its importance for the purposes of this course are that it can also be classified as a work of science fiction.

This lecture looks the novel as an exemplary work of science fiction, whose purpose it to critiquethr very tenets of the reductionistic scientificworldview of the Enlightenment.
