Joaquin Isaac Aveves was a news journalist and a honorary Mexican Consul to the US in Calexico. He moved his family to San Diego in 1922, and for many years wrote and edited for the Spanish language newspaper, Hispano Americano.
In this video his daughter, Isabel Aceves Mournian, age 94, described Aceves sitting on the steps of their home in San Diego, tearing records in half, then setting them afire with a match.
This was during the Great Depression. There was then, as there is now, great resentment of Mexican people living and working in the US. In 1936 there was a mass expulsion of Spanish speaking people. They were offered a small sum of money to board a boat, and return to Mexico. There were many instances of forced deportation, even of US citizens who spoke Spanish.
