History with Kayleigh | Jewellery & DNA Discovered, Denisova Cave. Neanderthal or Denisovan? @HistoryWithKayleigh | Uploaded January 2022 | Updated October 2024, 2 hours ago.
As you all know, new discoveries are constantly being made and sometimes we have new insights on pieces that were discovered in the past, which in my personal opinion still qualify as being a new discovery, because we discovered something that we previously didn’t know about the ancient world.
The Denisova Cave is located in the Bashelaksky Range of the Altai Mountains in Siberia Russia, and is a site that has provided items of Palaeontological and palaeo-archaeological interest.
Bone fragments from this cave showed that Denisovans originated from this area, the cave has produced artefacts of both Neanderthals and Denisovan hominid as well.
There’s been a new study that is able to recover preserved ancient hominin DNA from sediments of archaeological sites from tens of thousands of years ago.
These blocks of sediments were recovered from the cave decades ago and were soaked in black resin.
They were then sliced and examined under a microscope, the researchers then successfully extracted substantial amounts of Neanderthal DNA
The researchers believe that the cave may have been used as a toilet by ancient hominids some 30.000 or 40.000 years ago.
The extracted DNA from just a few milligrams of sediment was enough to determine the sex of the individuals and the DNA was cross-referenced with the DNA discovered from the bone fragments that were previously discovered in the cave.
In the summer of 2021 archaeologists discovered an amazing collection of Palaeolithic jewellery from the Denisova Cave’s southern gallery, among these pieces was a second stone bracelet.
This second stone bracelet was made of white marble and dated to be from approximately 45.000 years ago, this bracelet is similar to the one found in 2008 near the entrance of the cave’s eastern gallery.
