Archaeologists have suspected for a very long time that people across the globe have been taking hallucinogenic drugs for thousands of years and in some places in the world they have been able to confirm this, but this was never the case in Europe, until now.
Evidence in Eurasia and the Americas have revealed to us that the use of psychoactive drugs goes back thousands of years, but the presence of these mind altering plants at prehistoric sites gave archaeologists an incomplete picture in Europe due to the lack of direct evidence.
It was never clear if the ancient people actually consumed these plants, it was only clear that these plants were present due to discovered residue in jugs and at ritualistic sites.
With this discovery, the researchers are able to present the earliest evidence of drug consumption in European prehistory.
The recent study, published in the journal scientific reports finally confirms that the hairs found in the hollow sealed tubes in the cave in Menorca provide the first direct evidence for hallucinogenic drug use in Europe approximately 3000 years ago.
