In this episode, we interview Professor Jeffrey Kripal about the nature of transcendent experiences, visionary encounters, UFO sightings, and more, examining how these various phenomena challenge humanity's operative worldview and push boundaries.
Because they don't fit, they are either neglected or ignored.
Kripal is the J. Newton Rayzor Professor of Religion at Rice University, and has for years been an advocate of taking such experiences seriously, and on their own terms.
We discuss his book, "The Flip," and how the intellectual and psychological transformation described in those pages is happening more and more frequently to a broad number of people, but particularly to scientists.
Many of humanity's greatest thinkers and innovators, both in the past and presently, believed themselves to be in contact with non-human intelligences. We talk about the nature of these intelligences, the nature of humanity, and how one seems to invariably reflect the other.
Other questions we explore: How do the humanities fit into a reinvigorated study of the strange and seemingly impossible? How do we think about such things when our cultural authorities keep telling us they're necessarily nonsense? What do these experiences say about both the witnesses and whatever it is that we're encountering?
Also, has our current secular, materialist worldview contributed to the problems we're now facing across the globe, and what can be done to fix these issues? Should those who've flipped be trying to spread that message?
We also discuss Rice University's Archive of the Impossible -- made up of a number of document and record collections coming from Jacques Vallee, Professor John Mack, and others -- and how Kripal hopes these records will form the backbone of a transformative new field of study.
