Japanese government bond yields sit at record highs as the Bank of Japan shrinks its holdings and price sensitive investors set the long end.

David Scutt, StoneX Media Senior Market Analyst, breaks down why the long end of the Japanese curve has backed up far more than the front end.

The gap between short dated and long dated Japanese government bonds now reflects risk compensation rather than Bank of Japan rate expectations alone. Yield curve steepening, heavy long dated JGB supply and rising term premium are appearing across major bond markets as central banks let holdings roll off. Higher long term yields lift discount rates and the bar for risk assets.
