Following the Gempei War (1180 to 1185), the Minamoto Clan reigned nearly supreme of Japan. In order to consolidate their power, the Minamoto (with the backing of the Emperor) established a parallel government in the city of Kamakura--the Kamakura Shogunate (bakufu), a government of samurai, by samurai, for samurai. Mixed into this state was the increasing prevelance of Buddhism, which during the Kamakura Period took on sever distinct forms and came to impact Japanese Civilization heavily.
