Activists declared autonomous zones like CHOP in Seattle. Federal officers defended courthouses under nightly attack. Armed civilians appeared in the streets while officials debated intervention and media described the violence as mostly peaceful. The human and financial toll included at least 25 deaths, thousands of injured officers, more than 14,000 arrests, and over a billion dollars in insured damages.
