In the summer of 2020, after months of lockdowns and mounting frustration, the death of George Floyd in Minneapolis ignited protests that quickly spread across the country. What began as demonstrations soon turned into widespread rioting, looting, and arson in major cities. This video examines how local leaders responded as order collapsed in Minneapolis, Portland, Seattle, and Kenosha.
Police abandoned precincts. Activists declared autonomous zones like CHOP in Seattle. Federal officers defended courthouses under nightly attack. Armed civilians appeared in the streets while officials debated intervention and media described the violence as mostly peaceful. The human and financial toll included at least 25 deaths, thousands of injured officers, more than 14,000 arrests, and over a billion dollars in insured damages.
Years later the country still argues over what that summer revealed about the limits of authority and the willingness of leaders to restore order when it became politically costly. The images of burning blocks and abandoned streets remain for many the moment trust in government and institutions fractured in plain sight.
