Wyatt Earp has been remembered as one of the greatest lawmen of the American West, immortalized by Hollywood as the fearless hero of the Gunfight at the O.K. Corral. But the real Wyatt Earp was far more complicated. Before Tombstone made him a legend, Earp worked as a gambler, buffalo hunter, saloon operator, and frontier lawman, sometimes operating in the gray area between respectable citizen and outlaw.
From the violent cattle towns of Wichita and Dodge City to his friendship with Doc Holliday, Earp built a reputation for remaining remarkably calm in dangerous situations. His life changed forever in Tombstone, where tensions between the Earp brothers and the Cowboys culminated in the famous Gunfight at the O.K. Corral. The violence did not end there. After Virgil Earp was badly wounded and Morgan Earp was murdered, Wyatt formed a posse and launched the controversial Vendetta Ride, eventually leaving Arizona with murder warrants hanging over him.
So who was the real Wyatt Earp? Was he the incorruptible frontier lawman celebrated in movies and television, or an ambitious gambler and businessman whose legend eventually became larger than the truth?
