Rovio was one of gaming's first major successes with Angry Birds, but what happened to the studio, and why isn't it more influential today?
While perhaps you’ve heard of Rovio, you’ve definitely played their game: Angry Birds. They’ve released over 40 different versions, spin-offs, limited releases, and promotional versions all over the world. In fact, there are so many versions and so many downloads that it’s more likely that you’ve played an Angry Birds game than that you’ve eaten at a Taco Bell, or visited a Bank of America, or flown on Delta. It was a massive success that completely changed the way mobile gaming was viewed.
So, why is it that today, Rovio is basically a corporate nobody, a brand with little influence, and a stock that is semi-perpetually considered to be something you should never touch. What happened to change it from the glowing vanguard of the future and turn it into a warning for other companies?

How bad, exactly, is a game that is rated lower than 6 by IGN? Also, let’s talk about the value of review scores, the value of reviewers, and how this system is completely broken. In fact, this whole video might be something of a Trojan Horse to discuss Reviews in general.

Vermintide is a co-op horde shooter, only melee instead of shooting. However, what happens when you're one of the best players in the world and the hardest difficulties are easy for you? The Onslaught Captain's Series is a monthly event hosted by the best players in the world, who recruit and then train teams of promising players in order to compete against one another for prizes in a specially modded ultra high difficulty mode.
Follow the story of Aqshy, a player who discovered these events, then built a Tournament around them, including live events on Twitch with professional casters, community festivals and events, artwork and fanfictions, and an organization that draws more viewers than the official game channels, and then was hired by the game developer to run their community.

I have run into video game preservationists. It’s a hazard of the job, research older games enough and they’ll pop up out of nowhere. However, what does video game preservation mean? At first glance it seems like such an obvious answer, and then once you give it a little bit of thought you’ll realize-- actually it’s not so simple at all. Here’s a complete look at Game Preservation. What is it, what are the problems, what is the future, and why should you care?

Kingpin is a really fascinating game for three different reasons. First, the story of the companies that developed and produced the game. Secondly, the story of how the game affected the zeitgeist and gaming as an industry--how it helped illustrate for non-gamers that video games weren’t all toys for children, and thus helped usher in retailer voluntary age checks for games rated M. And thirdly, the story of a very mediocre game that is, today, not particularly good and would have been ignored at the time it was released if not for the controversy, and likely would have been forgotten entirely if not for the potentially upcoming remaster.

Limited Run Games has absorbed me for the past months as I researched the issues, complaints, scandals, and more associated with them. Every time I thought I was done, another issue would pop up and I'd have to amend the video to stay as complete as possible. At this point, I wouldn't be surprised by anything they do.
In today's video we take a look at the limited press company, and how it's built a business on the backs of the obsessed while explicitly allowing it's partners to become legitimized scalpers.
Please read my PINNED COMMENT for additional information after this video was released.

Thief 4 has been my "Worst Game Of All Time" for as long as I can remember, but I decided to check out if it's really all that bad, or if maybe it's only thought of as 'bad' because it wasn't a very good entry to the Thief franchise

Dune is such an incredibly cool universe, beloved by science fiction and fantasy fans alike, and it’s spawned quite a lot of media, and this inevitably led to several video games. However, Dune has disappeared, and the last time we saw a Dune game was 20 years ago. Since then...nothing. Why?

The Nintendo Switch...kinda sucks, and I’m prepared to defend that statement. I'm nothing if not well versed in people being angry at me on the internet, and I know I can’t just say a thing like this, so we're going to go in-depth. Buckle in and let's really deep dive why exactly the Nintendo Switch kinda sucks, and why Nintendo kinda sucks too.

David Bowie once worked with David Cage to make a video game, and a whole album of original music for that game, and not only can you still play it, but it's also pretty darn good
David Cage is a name you might immediately find you have a strong opinion about, or maybe you have a strong opinion about his game company Quantic Dreams. But this isn’t a story about David Cage, not directly at least. Instead, this is a story about the game that started him off, the reason he even started working on games. Omikron: The Nomad Soul has a lot of the parts of his later work in it, but somehow less and more at the same time.

Mafia's Definitive Edition was released in September, and my friend Minimme released his incredibly good video about it over the weekend. But I'm not about to let him get away with all that sweet sweet organized crime gameplay videos, so let's talk about Gangsters.
Gangsters: Organized Crime was released at the end of 1998. I want to say this game is not super influential, it's not very important in the grand scheme of things, it didn't pioneer any new genres, and it was reasonably successful but not notoriously so. But it still did some things very very right.

Star Wars Dark Forces introduced Kyle Katarn, and is the first Star Wars First Person Shooter ever to be released, and it’s released just about 15 months after the original Doom comes out
Dark Forces was the first game you could jump in, it allowed you move your mouse up and down (this was something most games didn't have), but more importantly it created a cohesive storyline--and at a level that other games weren't even imagining yet.

What’s the best fighting game of all time? More importantly, what's the history of the best fighting game of all time? The games that came before, and the inspirations it took.
Chances are you’ll say either Street Fighter or Smash Bros, depending on your preference for high skill caps or arcade-y-ness, though the answers start to break down from there. Maybe you’re one of those guys who wants to pull out the third party candidate with Mortal Kombat 2, Marvel Vs. Capcom 2, or Soulcalibur 2.
There’s a lot of contenders--more than I can possibly mention, so instead of the Best, let’s just look at the History--how did we arrive where we are today, and what games led us here.

It was the very first MMORPG--even created the term--and it's still online
In 1989, Brad Lineberger would partner up with James Hettinger, the founder of a brand new company called Tantalus / MPG-Net, and they would release Kingdom of Drakkar--a "graphical MUD."
This game would change hands several times, surviving from the days when you would pay $5 an hour to play all the way through the free-to-play revolution, and it's still online today.

Jerry Lawson is one of gaming's creators, member of elite coder culture, friend to global celebrities, and completely unknown.
It’s safe to say that Jerry liked electronics, he did it as a passion, as his love. Eventually, he quit doing military jobs, and moved into a freelance position with Fairchild Semiconductor. Now, you’ve probably never heard of this company, but at one point they were huge: They worked on the Apollo space missions, they co-invented the integrated circuit, and they were a huge producer of specialized semiconductor transistors. If that sounds like a strange company to bring up in a gaming sense, that is because of Jerry Lawson.

The Embracer Group suddenly appeared out of thin air, THQ Nordic seems to be everywhere, but didn't THQ go out of business?
One of the things that I so very much love to talk about on this channel are the companies that affect you but which you’ve never heard of. Some of these unknown companies, though, they’re a little harder to even start to identify. They change names, and allow their subsidiaries a much broader, wider amount of freedom--further distancing themselves from the public.
THQ Nordic is one such company, but I don’t mean the publisher of games like Remnant: From the Ashes, Sunset Overdrive, or Generation Zero. I’m talking about their owner--previously also called THQ Nordic, or recently they’ve changed their name to Embracer Group. Yes, the Embracer Group, not THQ Nordic, though they’ve also gone by Nordic Games Publishing, Game Outlet Europe, and Nordic Games Group.
Whew, this one is gonna be a doozy.

Sergey Titov is gaming's most controversial developer, creator of several 'worst games ever made,' & someone you've never heard of.
Sergey Titov is one of the most controversial developers, that you've never heard of. In fact, if you recognize his name it's almost certainly because you were negatively affected, and that's such a strange thing in the gaming industry. There are many names that we know: John Romero, Peter Molyneux, Sid Meiers, Hideo Kojima, and in almost every case the reason we know their name in the first place, is because they create incredible universes, wonderful stories, or innovative new genres. However, if you know Sergey Titov's name, it's probably because you think he's a scam artist.

Idle Games, Clicker Games, or Incremental Games: Where did this reasonably new genre come from, what are the biggest names in the industry, and why are they so popular?
Every few years a new genre of game appears, usually a refinement of some indie game. There’s a natural curve to these things, as the popular game becomes more popular and competitors begin to produce products that iterate and improve on the original.
One of the most popular genres in recent history is also one that tends to be controversial. Idle Games, Incremental Games, ‘Clickers.’ These titles are often dismissed immediately because they are too casual, too automated, not game-enough, and yet statistically speaking you’ve not only played one of these games, but you’ve actually got one installed on your phone or PC right now.

Superliminal Is A "Bad Puzzle Game." Before you try to string me up, let me clarify exactly what makes a good puzzle game, and why Superliminal doesn't meet those requirements. It's all about nuance.
I want to say upfront that I liked this game a lot. I took me about an hour and a half, maybe just on the far side of 90 minutes, and that probably doesn’t sound like a lot of time but I’m also a huge fan of puzzle games and logic puzzles just sort of make sense to me. I ran through Portal and Portal 2 in pretty short times as well, and I don’t think that actually detracts from my enjoyment. I’m okay with this game being short as long as it’s fun, and Supleriminal is. It’s an entirely enjoyable experience.
That being said, Superliminal is a bad *puzzle game.*

There is a historical precedence to stories about Sierra. In a lot of ways, these stories MUST tell three chapters. There is a mythological aspect to Sierra and the timing and influence they had, especially on the burgeoning home computer industry. The story follows a Rise And Fall dynamic, how Sierra saw that the end user--the gamer--would slip into the immersive graphics of a game more easily than the novelization of it, how many gamers would rage against them for their “dumbing down” of the interactive story and blame Sierra for poisoning the purity of the medium, how they would lift up and create the Adventure game model and then--as those Adventure games were replaced--so too would they be.

No One Lives Forever, and it's sequel, are considered to be among some of the best games ever made, but you can't buy them.
Taking a slightly less slapstick tone, more in the vein of Our Man Flint, a '60s era parody of James Bond itself, they would release The Operative: No One Lives Forever in November of 2000 to rave reviews. Today, many list it as one of the top games of the 2000s, some rank it even higher as one of the best games ever made, and it was nominated and won many Game of the Year awards. And of course it was followed up with a sequel, No One Lives Forever 2: A Spy in H.A.R.M.'s Way, which was equally well received, won several Game of the Year and other awards, Best Music, Best Writing, Best Action Game. This was another major success story. Yet today, you can't even buy them.

Day of Defeat was a Half-Life mod, purchased by Valve, and released as a full retail game (just like Counter-Strike) but no one remembers.
In September of 2005, almost 14 years ago, Valve announced that they would be adding a new class-based multiplayer shooter to their catalog. No, this wasn't Team Fortress 2, which wasn't released until 2007--this was a World War 2 shooter that today is often completely forgotten. It's barely even mentioned anymore, which is a travesty. Today, let's remember Day of Defeat.

Bungie's Oni is often considered a failure, even though Bungie and Rockstar worked on it. What happened to Oni?
Halo, Destiny, Myth, & Marathon: Bungie's Legacy. In fact, almost everything that Bungie's done has been incredibly popular, & incredibly influential.
However, there is a single game that time seems to have forgotten. It's a unique product from a unique time. It was made in conjunction with Rockstar and Take Two, it influenced Halo's production--and there's still traces of it in there today, and it stands alone as one of the only attempts to create any game quite like it.

Telltale has closed their doors and ceased operations. You’ve probably played at least one of their games released in the past 14 years.
Solve puzzles, engage in conversation, make choices, and guide a story through branching paths across multiple episodes. Telltale had such brand recognition in this style of game that they were almost a generic term, like Aspirin, Escalator, Dumpster and Velcro. And in fact their closure doesn’t mean that people won’t continue to use their name to evoke a certain kind of game experience.
Whether you enjoy the Telltale-style Adventure Game or you think they’re buggy cookie-cutter fan-bait that relies on popular licenses to push sales, the fact is that they are responsible for bringing episodic games to their current level of acceptance.

Important games change gaming overall, that’s really the TLDR here. They make major technological strides, or they cause the industry itself to change. They change customer expectation. An important game is not necessarily obviously influential, nor is it necessarily anyone’s favorite game. They are important, but important doesn’t mean they sell well or are successful. In fact, in some ways, being successful is inconsequential to how important a title really is.
There is an argument to be made that any game that anyone plays is important in the fabric of gaming history. It’s a Psych 101 type of argument, in that we build our future games by standing on the shoulders of the games before them. Therefore, every game a developer has ever played influences their future games when they make them. That kind of argument is vague and I personally believe quite wrong. There’s plenty of bland out there, and I don’t believe bland is influential.
So for my purposes, for the purposes of this video, and the discussion in the comments about it, an important game is one that drastically and irrevocably changes the landscape of gaming history.

There’s always a game that does something first. Some titles influence a lot of people, or force major changes upon the industry. Some create new genres, or introduce wild new technologies. They might lead to controversies, or simply introduce new concepts of gameplay, or even bring people together in completely new ways. Some titles have incredible teams working on them, and through the development process those team members are discovered and they become influencers in their own right.
Of course, there’s one game that did all of this. In fact, did some of it multiple times. It’s the most influential game of all time.

I guarantee there’s one game that you, as the individual, believe is better than any other. It is the BEST. There’s nothing that is better than this game. You love it, it’s incredible.
Take a moment. Just a moment. Pause the video if you need to. Get a game in your mind, something that is truly the best. Not just good, not well received by others, not highly rated by reviewers. The game that you believe is better than any other. Something perfect.
Got it? Good. I’m going to tell you why it sucks.
