On the eleventh of August the man who built Project Skyscraper said goodbye and meant it. My role stops here, he wrote, signed it Archie, and left.
Seven days later the status page started labelling every dreamer with their own prime number. One node came up blank. An Operator posted about it at quarter past six in the evening, and thirty-five minutes later it was fixed.
That is not an automated system. That is a person, still reading a forum he had already said goodbye on.
This is the fortnight Project Skyscraper carried on without its author: the farewell letter and the one-year archive it promised, fifty Operators answering in three languages, a fortnight where nobody could tell whether it had ended, the site rebuilding itself into a public scrapbook of memories, and one Operator who emailed four times and was finally answered.
