IS-2 arrival to Panssarimuseo / Parola Armour Museum March 2026. A peek inside the heavy tank turret and the tank hull.
The new attraction of the Parola Armour Museum is the Soviet heavy IS-2 tank, which was manufactured as a breakthrough tank for the Red Army during World War II.
The tank arrived in Finland from the Czech Republic, where it was owned by the Czech Institute of Military History. The tank was exchanged for a Sturmgeschütz III assault gun.
The heavy tank model that is arriving is extremely rare and their entry into the exchange market is therefore very exceptional. Officially, the exchange of objects takes place between the Finnish War Museum and the Czech Institute of Military History. In the future, the IS-2 battle tank will be permanently exhibited at the Tank Museum, and it is expected to become the museum’s new attraction, attracting both history enthusiasts and tourists to come and visit Parola.
The special exhibition “Crushed Soviet Iron – Tank Defense in the Summer of 1944” opening at the Parola Armour Museum in the spring is strongly related to the battle tank in question. The Tank Museum also presents the equipment of our opponents during the wars that were used on Finnish soil. These heavy Soviet IS-2 main battle tanks were used by the enemy forces during the great offensive of the summer of 1944, when the Finns destroyed them in the terrain of the Karelian Isthmus. However, not a single IS-2 tank was captured as war booty.
This one of the most massive battle tanks of its time gained a very impressive reputation for being more powerful and heavier than the tanks used in Finland. The IS-2 tank's 122mm cannon was a formidable opponent even for the German King Tiger tank.
Panssarimuseo
Panssarimuseo on perustettu vuonna 1961 ja siihen tutustuu vuosittain yli 30 000 kävijää. Museon kokoelmiin kuuluu noin 70 panssariajoneuvoa, 40 panssarintorjunta-asetta ja panssarijuna.
Parola Armour Museum
Parola Armour Museum, Armoured Vehicle Museum is a military museum located 110 kilometres north of Helsinki in Parola, near Hämeenlinna, Finland, a few kilometres from the Finnish Army Armoured Brigade training unit. It displays various tanks, armoured vehicles and anti-tank guns used by the Finnish Defence Forces throughout their history. A rare exhibit is an armoured train used in World War II.
