In Brazil it is claimed that this is the most beautiful street in the world. This is quite a claim since there are many beautiful streets across the globe,
Rua Gonçalo de Carvalho is a street located in the neighborhood of Independência in the city of Porto Alegre, capital of the Brazilian state of Rio Grande do Sul. The street is lined with trees of the tipuana genus, it became internationally known after a campaign for its preservation, which spread across the internet and led to the road being named "the most beautiful street in the world" and being considered "environmental heritage" by the city hall.
On June 5, 2006, after the mobilization of residents for the preservation of the trees of Gonçalo de Carvalho, the site was recognized as "historical, cultural and environmental heritage of the city" in a decree that was signed by Mayor José Fogaça The announcement of this recognition was made during the opening of the 22 nd Municipal Environment Week.
In 2008, after a Portuguese biologist saw photos of the street on the internet, he dubbed the street "the most beautiful street in the world" on his website. The informal title ended up remaining and attracts many visitors to the site are looking to photograph the street, especially the green tunnel that is formed by the Tipuanas trees.
On May 5, 2024, a week after I left there was massive flooding in the city of Porto Alegre.
The green tunnel ended up with some gaps on its roof, but it still remains satisfying to residents and visitors.
The name “Rua Gonçalo de Carvalho” is a tribute to the gaucho merchant Gonçalo de Carvalho. The name of the street doesn’t honor the missionary Portuguese Gonçalo de Carvalho, like some believe.
Mr. Gonçalo H. de Carvalho was born in 1853, in Cachoeira do Sul, Rio Grande do Sul, where he was educated. Carvalho was in Rio de Janeiro for 4 years. He returned to Rio Grande do Sul in 1868, and was employed for 7 years in a commercial house. Carvalho established himself in 1875 in the offal business, which he imported from Switzerland, England, France, Germany and other countries in Europe and North America. The more than 100 trees of the genus Tipuana, lined up on approximately 500 meters of sidewalks, would have been planted in the late 1930’s by workers of German origin employed in an old local brewery.
Until 2003, the Porto Alegre Symphony Orchestra occupied the Leopoldina Theater, on Avenida Independência. By the request of the property by its owners, the orchestra would be without a permanent headquarters. Created in 2004, the Pablo Komlós Cultural Foundation was founded to enable the construction of its own headquarters for the Porto Alegre Symphony Orchestra. After negotiations with Shopping Total In 2005, it was agreed to build a building for the symphony where part of the commercial establishment's parking lot was located. Since the façade of the headquarters faces Avenida Cristóvão Colombo, the complex would have a garage building with an exit to Rua Gonçalo de Carvalho. Part of the population of the road and the surrounding area mobilizes because they consider the project harmful to the local community and to the trees that form the green tunnel of the street and the site ends up being discarded. Since 2006, OSPA has been negotiating with the city for the area next to the City Hall, in the Maurício Sirotsky Sobrinho Park. Work on the site began in 2012 but was interrupted in 2014 because of problems with the construction company. In 2018, OSPA would gain a permanent space when the symphony's concert hall was inaugurated at the Fernando Ferrari Administrative Center (CAFF).
