Spoiler warning for the latest episode of Re:Zero. This video explains why the Pleiades Watchtower fired the mysterious light attack that killed Natsuki Subaru and Beatrice, and reveals the ability behind it known as Hell’s Snipe. The attack is used by Shaula, the girl briefly shown at the end of the episode, who has been ordered by her master to stop anything from reaching the tower and the shrine where the Witch of Envy is sealed.
This raises a major question about Shaula’s identity and her true master. While she appears to be following the orders of the Sage, she is not actually the Sage herself. The real Sage is Flugel, a figure from 400 years ago who is heavily connected to the history of the Pleiades Watchtower. He is believed to have built the tower and assisted in the sealing of Satella alongside the Hero, the Divine Dragon, and the First Sword Saint.
Flugel has already been subtly referenced in Re:Zero Season 1 during the White Whale arc, when Subaru and the others brought it down using the massive Great Flugel Tree. It is said that Flugel planted its seed, and his name can even be seen carved into the tree itself, confirming his long-standing influence in the world of Re:Zero.
