Is nostalgia pointless, or does it hold real meaning? In this video, I reflect on the role of nostalgia in our lives while cosying up in my very vintage home. From childhood memories in my grandparents’ living room to exploring my grandpa’s RAF suitcase from the 1950s, I look at how objects, rituals, and stories connect us to the past and shape who we are today... as well as the danger of rose-tinted glasses and aesthetics.
With Remembrance Sunday behind us and Armistice Day approaching, this is the perfect time to pause and consider the lessons history teaches us. I share personal family stories, including my great uncle Don, a WWII survivor, and explore how nostalgia can provide comfort, perspective, and a sense of continuity in our fast-paced modern lives.
We also discuss the psychology of nostalgia — how it boosts mood, strengthens social bonds, and helps us navigate loss and change — while being mindful of its bittersweet and sometimes escapist side. From cherished teacups to second-hand treasures, I reflect on why the past matters and how it can guide us to live more intentionally in the present.
