The U.S. government is preparing to take swift economic action against nations and financial institutions that maintain business ties with Iran. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent announced that new sanctions are expected by the end of the week, characterizing the move as an effort to cut off economic lifelines supporting the regime. The shift in strategy comes after months of relying primarily on military force in the region.
Implementing the new economic measures will require persuading international partners to isolate Iran, a process that experts note could take time to execute effectively. Retired U.S. Air Force official John Teichert questioned why the economic approach was not initiated earlier when combat operations first began, noting that the administration now appears prepared for a prolonged effort. The strategy also introduces diplomatic complications involving China, particularly with Chinese President Xi Jinping scheduled to visit the U.S. next month.
Despite the heavy emphasis on economic pressure, military options remain active. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth stated that while financial sanctions currently inflict the most damage, the U.S. has not ruled out kinetic strikes in or around the Strait of Hormuz. Meanwhile, maritime activity in the Strait has seen increased traffic alongside reports of a recent attack on a vessel.
