CanSCHOOL Spotlight: The Ironing Process in Bodymakers

Ironing dies shape the can by thinning its sidewalls and stretching it to its full height. But if a can enters two ironing dies at once, it can tear.

To prevent this, coolant rings are placed between each ironing die; adding the right amount of spacing to guide the can through one die at a time.

You won’t find a coolant ring at the redraw die, though. That’s because the redraw stage reshapes the cup without thinning the walls.

Coolant rings also do more than just space things out; they help regulate temperature and reduce friction. Coolant lines connect to each ring, supplying a steady flow of fluid through internal manifolds. This keeps the dies cool and the tooling lubricated throughout the process.
