CanSCHOOL Spotlight: The Domer in Bodymakers
At the end of the punch’s forward stroke, the can reaches the domer; the tool that shapes the can’s bottom.
First, the can hits the outer domer die, forming the crown. Then, as the domer compresses, the can makes contact with the center die, forming the dome.
This compression, assisted by air pressure, applies the clamping force needed to form the bottom without damaging the can.
As the punch retracts, the domer returns to its starting position. Air escapes through vent holes, helping push the can off the die. The center die also leaves a small imprint for quality tracking, marking which bodymaker produced the can.
