As automation continues to transform today's networks, one component that can be challenging for a number of reasons. IP Addresses represent the glue that holds networks together - whether private networks, or the global Internet. Assignment of the right IP Addresses for vast, heterogenous networks can be non-trivial. Variations in characteristics can make these details nuanced:
- IPv4 versus IPv6
- Globally unique, allocated versus Private
- Advertised via BGP summary routes versus Non-Advertised
- Regionally advertised
TM Forum has specified Open API formats in support of standardization toward the system integration that Service Providers need. Within TELUS we have helped define and extensively are now using TMF685 and TMF639 for the assignment of suitable IP addresses for customer services (DHCP and Static subnet services) as well as Infrastructure.
In this talk I will summarize the problem, the APIs, and a few use cases, as well as some of the surrounding considerations.
