We flew IcelandAir from Baltimore to Amsterdam, with a 1-hour layover in Keflavik. I had booked us on Saga Class (IcelandAir's version of first class) for the entire trip, but the day beforehand I received an email and text saying that we had been downgraded to Economy. When I called them they said it must have been an error, because they saw us in Saga for both legs. Well, that was not the case! When I checked in at the airport it turned out we had indeed been bumped to Economy for the KEF-AMS leg. Thankfully it wasn't the BWI-KEF leg, since we had a very tight layover in KEF - if we had been in the back in Economy and not beaten the rush to get to the front of the massive Passport Control line, I doubt we would have made the connecting flight.
The staff were very apologetic, but nobody could tell us why we were bumped. I give my thoughts in the video. As a follow-up, I had to contact IcelandAir multiple times before receiving the refund, which was only $250 total for both of us! Per EU 261/2004, they must reimburse 50% of the ticket price for flights between 1,500km and 3,500km, and they insisted that the Saga Class KEF-AMS leg of the flight would have only cost $500 total for both of us, which seems significantly less than what I actually paid. But since I didn't pay for each leg individually, there was no way to fight it.
All in all I still recommend IcelandAir. The airport staff and flight attendants handled the change well and were very kind to us about it. Unfortunately I can't say the same for the Corporate side.
