Hi All!, This one is an easy woodworking project that improves your veneering skills. In this video, I build a DIY veneered tissue box cover using scrap plywood and simple tools.
This five-sided wooden tissue box cover is designed to fit over a standard Kleenex tissue box and is a great beginner woodworking project. I used ½-inch birch plywood, but ¾-inch plywood or MDF will work just as well as long as the surface is smooth for veneer.
How to Build the Tissue Box Cover
The box is made from five pieces: two sides, a front, a back, and a top. The parts are assembled with simple butt joints, wood glue, and a few nails—no complicated joinery required.
Before attaching the top, I drilled a 1¾-inch hole using a Forstner bit. To prevent the tissues from tearing, I rounded over the bottom edge of the hole with a router and round-over bit. After assembly, the nail holes were filled and everything was sanded smooth.
Veneering and Finish
The veneer was applied in stages—first the sides, then the front and back, and finally the top. After final sanding, the project was ready for finish.
This project is perfect if you’re interested in veneering for beginners, small woodworking projects, or scrap wood projects that actually get used around the house.
