On 5 March, ASPI’s Women in Defence and Security Network and the European Delegation in Canberra hosted a panel event on women in conflict, protest and diplomacy, to mark International Women’s Day. This panel event explored how women are pushing back against repression, with a focus on Iran and Afghanistan, and how Ukrainian women are contributing to the war efforts in Russia’s war on Ukraine. Panellists discussed the global state of human rights, including both concerning backsliding and areas of major progress.

Panellists included Elaine Pearson, Asia Director at Human Rights Watch; Aryana Mohmood, PhD Scholar at ANU; Hanna Manoilenko, PhD candidate in International Relations at the University of Melbourne; and Nos Hosseini, co-secretary and spokesperson of the Iranian Women's Association; and the session was moderated by Gai Brodtmann, Chair of ASPI’s Council.
