This session considered the road to artificial general intelligence (AGI) and the implications for all societies once it is realised and becomes widely adopted. Many AI leaders predict AGI will be achieved within two to seven years, with superintelligence not far behind. It should be the best thing that has ever happened to us as a civilization, but we need to steer it wisely and prepare our societies, economies and political systems.

This panel examined how we can best integrate AGI, the security risks associated with it, and whether commercial and geopolitical races are pushing us into dangerously fast developments that are cutting corners on safety measures. Speakers included: Daisy McGregor, Head of UK Policy at Anthropic and Dr Roman V. Yampolskiy, Founding Director of the Cyber Security Lab at the University of Louisville. The session was moderated by David Wroe, Resident Senior Fellow at ASPI and Convenor of the Sydney Dialogue 2025.
