Today 798 stands as the epicentre of China’s contemporary art landscape. Over 200 galleries, countless stores and cafes gathered here, making it the Beijing version of SoHo district in Manhattan. It was first built in the 1950s as a military factory. Around 2002, artists slowly took over the place when it was on the verge of closing. From 2005 to 2009, I witnessed the ‘renaissance’ of 798 while living in Beijing. Today I am here to revisit the area, hoping to find some traces of the good old 798 spirit.
