After a 14-year police investigation, a global manhunt, and three years of secret court hearings, the man pegged as the world’s biggest drug lord was finally sentenced in court. But just to 16 years. Here’s what happened behind court’s closed doors. Let me tell you about it.
The Mob Reporter here with news on the downfall, for now, of Tse Chi Lop, known as Asia’s El Chapo, whose empire virtually cornered the market across the Asia-Pacific region, the biggest drug market on Earth. I have news on the outcome in Australia for the notorious Chinese-born Canadian who was named as the undisputed head of a wildly successful multi-billion global drug syndicate, and some of the evidence against him heard in secret that can now be told.
This episode of The Mob Reporter includes exclusive video of Tse Chi Lop being arrested at an Amsterdam airport in January 2021, confirmed authentic and legitimate. The arrest was a milestone moment. The international effort to catch him was extraordinary. Called Operation Kungur, it was an unprecedented inter-agency investigation encompassing some 30 police agencies on three continents, including China, the United States, Australia, Canada, Myanmar, Japan, Thailand, Taiwan, Vietnam and many others. The United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime was also involved.
To understand how big a deal that was, consider the scope of the operation pinned on Tse. His revenue exceeded the GDP of some of the countries where he operated, officials said. Once again, a drug kingpin was measured against the yardstick of El Chapo Guzman, but this time the comparison seemed insulting to Tse Chi Lop, rather than to El Chapo.
Tse is credited with masterminding an alliance of five triad crime groups in Asia. Many were once deadly rivals, but together they reached heights none could reach on their own. His innovation was mastering global logistics, adaptability, and modern business efficiency, basically making it the Amazon of dope. They called their syndicate “The Company,” because for them, it was run as a business. For police, it was called the Sam Gor syndicate, Cantonese for “Brother Number Three,” or “The Third Brother,” which was one of Tse Chi Lop’s nicknames.
The syndicate was worth as much as $21 billion, by the UN’s estimate.
It built industrial-scale manufacturing facilities in the Shan State, in Asia’s Golden Triangle, which is as much a no-man’s land as there is. The Sam Gor syndicate sold enormous wholesale loads to retailers in dozens of countries, with distinctive packaging — brightly colour bags claiming to contain loose-leaf tea. Tse spread his influence far and wide, while keeping himself nearly invisible. Record-breaking loads linked to the Sam Gor syndicate kept flooding Australia, Japan, Indonesia, Malaysia, New Zealand, Cambodia, and many others.
After his arrest in Amsterdam and extraction to Australia, the court room doors in Melbourne stayed closed for three long yeas. On Dec. 4, the judge revealed that Tse had pleaded guilty to conspiring to traffic drugs. What wasn’t said was much at all about the evidence against him. Including a witness. I’m told it was Suky Lieu.
