Mobsters call him “The Doctor” and now we know why — Giuseppe Guttadauro was a top surgeon at a large city hospital while he was also an influential Mafia boss in Sicily. Let me tell you about it.

The Mob Reporter here with the story of a man who represents the most awkward and worrying aspects of the Mafia in Italy. Guttadauro is where politicians, police, high society, and mobsters met; he’s the poster child for the complexity of fighting the Mafia in the birthplace of the Mafia, Sicily, a land where it’s hard to know whose side anyone is really on.
Guttadauro was arrested, along with the youngest of his sons, Mario Carlo, on Feb. 13, 2022, when he arrived back in Italy from Morocco. Along with his arrest came news that — once again — The Doctor was caught on police wiretaps. Previously it was bugs in his house when meeting with mobsters and Palermo’s elite. This time, it was a police using his Apple iPhone that allegedly caught him giving Mafia lessons to his sons and gossiping about his mob friends and rivals.
Guttadauro’s name stands out like ubiquitous actor Kevin Bacon’s — in almost any direction or sphere of Sicilian life, start with anyone and you quickly find a connection to The Doctor. Obviously not everyone, but there are some doozies, Including Italy’s most wanted man, Matteo Messina Denaro, considered the top-ranked Mafia boss, the boss of bosses, who has been a fugitive since 1993. Guttadauro’s brother, Filippo, is Denaro’s brother-in-law. That’s like living in England when you’re a close relative of the Queen.
