Yes, we enforce laws, but we try to do so in ways that protect a person’s dignity.
Our response to Florida’s statue prohibiting public camping is an example. We use the money seized in criminal investigations to pay for bus tickets to send those camping in our Downtown back home. If our officers see someone who may be without a place to live, we can offer them a no-cost way back to their home city where they have loved ones to receive them. We call it Homeward Bound.
Since JSO created Homeward Bound in October 2024, we’ve helped nearly 1,150 people return to their support systems. We believe you can tell a difference when you visit Downtown.
