Architect Paul McClean takes us inside one of his most iconic homes: a striking modern residence perched high above West Hollywood with sweeping views of Los Angeles. Designed over 20 years ago as one of McClean’s very first homes in L.A., the 6-bedroom property — located at 1474 Blue Jay Way — has evolved with its owners while maintaining the signature architectural elements that define his work. Set on a dramatic hillside site in the Bird Streets, the 7,083-square-foot residence was designed to take full advantage of its panoramic setting. From nearly every vantage point in the home, glass walls frame sweeping views that stretch across the city skyline and out to the distant mountains, turning the landscape into a constant backdrop for daily life.
One of the most distinctive features is the dramatic pool that runs through the center of the home, dividing the living spaces from the private sleeping quarters while creating a striking architectural axis. Floating stepping stones cross the water, forming a sculptural pathway to the front entrance and setting the tone for the home’s seamless indoor-outdoor design. Inside, the open living area connects the kitchen, dining room, and lounge, creating a space that feels both expansive and intimate. Clean lines, minimalist finishes, and carefully scaled furnishings allow the architecture—and the view—to remain the focus.
