I was invited to visit ABCs and Rice, a non-profit school and community organisation in Siem Reap, Cambodia, after meeting volunteer Matt at Bella’s Rock & Roll Bingo. What started as a casual conversation turned into one of the most eye-opening experiences I’ve had since living in Cambodia.
In this video, I visit ABCs and Rice to see how this Siem Reap NGO supports Cambodian children and families through free education, food programs, rice support, school supplies and other practical help.
ABCs and Rice currently supports more than 250 students and their families in the Siem Reap area. The organisation provides free English education alongside local Khmer schooling, breakfast and lunch programs, monthly rice rations, school uniforms and essential supplies, higher education scholarships and family support.
One of the things that surprised me was learning that although public education in Cambodia is often described as free, families can still struggle with the additional costs involved in sending a child to school. Uniforms, shoes, notebooks, backpacks and other essential items can become a serious burden for families already living on very little.
This is where ABCs and Rice tries to help, making it easier for children to attend school, learn and stay connected to their education. The organisation says its approach is centred around education, food, rice support and practical assistance for families.
During my visit, I got to see the school, meet the children and learn more about the work being done by the Khmer teachers, staff and international volunteers.
