"There was a lot of social and cultural pressure to be a doctor -- that was what the successful Indian families had their children do.
I’d had a patient who came in, he had tried to kill himself the night before. He said, 'I love art, I love all these other things, but I have to make a living and I’m not able to take care of my daughter.'"
I was so much more interested in connecting with this human being then I was about filling out the form and wishing him on his way -- okay life saved. Then I thought, well, am I really supposed to be this doctor? I just knew something wasn't quite right.
I decided to leave medicine - and I graduated from medical school - but I didn’t go on and train to be a doctor. I’m a CEO of a health-technology conference company. And so, it’s so important that if you have an opportunity to take a stand that you should do it.
I think I used to be shy of that when I was younger but now I’m absolutely proud to do that and tell younger women you can do whatever you want to do -- run a company and be the face of it.
