"Sobriety was a complicated journey ‘cause to begin with, I didn’t know that it was an option. Where I grew up, everybody I knew drank. We were rowdy Canadians - ya know, hockey-playin’, drinkin’, good-time-lovin’ Canadians.
When I moved to New York City, I started getting chronic pancreatitis. I was going on a blind date to meet a man who is now my husband, and it was 6pm, and I couldn’t get out of bed. I just thought to myself, ‘It’s nighttime and you can’t get up ‘cause you have been drinking and that’s pathetic,’ but out of that darkness came this determination: you can do better and you deserve better.
Then I thought to myself, ‘Oh no. What do most people do on a date? They go for a drink. Please don’t let this man say, ‘Do you wanna go get a drink?’ because I actually don’t know how to say ‘no’ to that yet.’ And I didn’t find out ‘til later that he doesn’t drink either, so that was a beautiful way of the universe taking care of me, but the universe wouldn’t have been able to take care of me if I didn’t take care of myself first."
