The Indiana State Capitol Grounds opened in 1888 after eight years of construction. Only materials native to Indiana were used. These include doors of Indiana oak and walls of Indiana limestone. The building was wired for electricity, despite the fact Indianapolis didn’t have an electrical power grid just yet. The building’s cornerstone is a ten-ton block of limestone from Spencer, Indiana, and the day before the Capitol opened, a hole was bored into the cornerstone and filled with a time capsule of 42-items (crops, coins, a map, newspaper, Indianapolis history book, and a Bible). Until 1962, the Capitol was the tallest building in Indiana until the City-County Building of Indianapolis opened. Located throughout the Indiana State Capitol grounds are more than 40 works of public art created by Indianans of all types of mediums and whose creation dates span more than 130 years.
