In the 1971 Indo-Pakistani War, both Air Forces launched numerous counter-air missions. Indian Air Force often used Hawker Hunters. Equipped with four powerful cannons, they could effectively strafe any enemy aircraft caught in the open. On 8 December, four Indian Hunters from No 20 Squadron attacked Murid airbase and they estimated their effectiveness to be quite good. They thought they had damaged a transport aircraft and two MiG-19s. The real truth would remain hidden for seventeen years and it would come from an unexpected source.
