During the Operation Linebacker, American Air Force often employed fighter-bomber formations to create chaff corridors. Airplanes such as F-4 Phantoms flew relatively slowly and level, releasing chaff bombs. This made them and their escorts rather vulnerable and they were often targeted by North Vietnamese MiGs. On 21 June 1972, four F-4E Phantoms led by Col Mele Vojvodich and Lt Col Von Christiansen escorted a formation of chaffers into Route Package VI. On the other side, the North Vietnamese sent Le Thanh Đạo and Mai Văn Tuế in their MiG-21s to intercept the Phantom formation.
