Developing and depicting characters and stories that feature experiences of deafness and hearing loss.

This session explores creating characters who are deaf, and how stories can feature them, with perspectives from a TV writer, author and a producer of content specially tailored for deaf children. They discuss developing stories that are relevant, inclusive and authentic, while also interesting and exciting for all children.

Producing stories executed with high-quality writing that stimulates and excites all children while also being authentic need not be daunting. As we hear from people who have forged paths with their writing, telling universal stories that centre around deafness.

The session also examines the how – whether it’s creating a team with lived experiences or hiring specialist consultants – and explore the impact of inclusive storytelling on the audience.

Honest and practical, and valuable for anyone creating, commissioning, or stewarding inclusive children’s content.
