A collaboration between CMC’s Inclusivity Now and Thinking Differently strands, we provide insights into the importance of ensuring diverse storytellers create and produce their own stories, and examples of successful projects.
Children primarily reside in three spaces: home, school, and community. To create better connections between and among these spaces, mainstream media content can be used as a vehicle to inform and engage youth in educational contexts. But for this media to be effective, it must convey authentic, relevant stories about those communities in their own voice.
There is an African proverb that says: ’Until the lion has his own historian, the story of the hunt will be told from the perspective of the hunter.’ We need more stories from the perspective of the lion; as well as the hunter. Community-based creators and studios using innovative distribution methods are essential for success when ‘Thinking Differently’ about the role of media and storytelling in education.
