Abstract: To live longer and happier lives, Americans need to reduce their intake of added sugar. Part of this struggle is understanding the default options that are given. This session shares the story of the Sugar Smart Coalition’s (SSC) Nutrition Guideline Calculator, a collaborative project between a public health student and the SSC to increase awareness of the nutritional content of beverage options. Using R Shiny, we created an interactive calculator that brings nutritional guidelines to life. This web application enables users across the county to have a dedicated tool to analyze the sugar content of beverages in vending machines. The organization plans to use this tool to survey the beverage options available in schools, local government buildings, and restaurants. With the power of this information, the SSC plans to further its goal of reducing added sugar consumption across the state. This session will share the experience of forging new, community-orientated relationships to further common goals and the innovative ways open-source tools can help accomplish them.
