So IKEA is really starting to build momentum with its Matter over Thread smart home devices, and the latest product to get the treatment is the iconic VARMBLIXT donut lamp. What makes this version particularly interesting is that it’s essentially a smart upgrade of the original lamp, keeping the same design but adding smart features.
It looks almost identical.
It costs the same price.
But now it adds colour changing lighting, a remote control in the box, and support for Matter which means it works inside Apple Home.
On paper that sounds like an incredible upgrade.
But after using it for a couple of weeks I discovered some really good things about it, and also a few things you absolutely need to be aware of before buying one.
So in this video I’m going to show you the design, how it works with Apple Home, how the remote behaves, and some quirks in the setup that caught me by surprise.
